Tokyo “underground”

A secret universe is hidden underneath the surface of Japan’s capital

Clubs and fancy restaurants co-exist with plantations of vegetation, and many delicatessens are located here as well. The sun never shines on this underground capital, which is full of the same types of radiance and surprises that one finds in the open air.

Due to the current weak Hong Kong dollar, it seems extremely disadvantageous to convert Hong Kong dollars to Japanese yen. Still, we want to enjoy traveling. Rather than wishing for a cheap yen, it’s better to change your own travel style. To that end, will you save money on eating? Will you travel to Japan without eating kaiseki cuisine or sashimi? Will you really give up? Why not become a bit more of a gourmand – Tokyo contains alleys and cafes that resemble hidden houses with prices that will surprise you when the check comes. There, you can eat delicious food for 1,000 yen or less.

Directly after the earthquake, tourism-related sales fell to one-third their original amount. The government is exploring ways to draw tourists, such as by providing free airline tickets.
The Sky Tree is the world’s highest radio tower, and is the second-highest structure after the Burj Khalifa. Interview with architect Shigeru Yoshino: “The Sky Tree was entirely undamaged by the earthquake. Today it is a symbol that serves as a ‘flag’ to give people courage.” The Sky Tree will open in May of next year and has a unique shape; the aboveground floors are triangular but become rounder as you go up. It also looks different depending on the angle you view it from.
Japan is not a country with a low cost of living. Another problem is that the high-valued yen exacerbates such impacts, so it’s not a reasonably priced destination for foreigners to visit. Hotels in the central part of Tokyo lowered the prices of their rooms for several months after the earthquake, but now they have returned to their normal rates.
Interview with a person staying at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn): “Hotels in the center of the city are expensive, but you can stay at ryokan at comparatively reasonable prices. I think the number of tourists would increase if it cost less to get here.”
It’s certain that the world is paying attention to Japan, but…

I) Shinya Tasaki, a Japanese man, was the first Asian grand prizewinner of the World’s Best Sommelier competition

On the 31st of last month I met Mr. Tasaki at Trattoria T, his Italian restaurant in Tokyo. Mr. Tasaki planned a dinner on that day. First of all I asked him about the portion of his book A Wine Lifestyle White Paper。(the Korean version of this book was published in 2008) in which he wrote, “There’s no need to always drink red wine with meat or white wine with fish – you can do what you want.” He said, “Miraculously, only wine involves many strange rules.” Furthermore, “There are no rules that absolutely have to be observed when eating or drinking. The most important thing is to have fun…”

II) Old-fashioned market scenery – which is being pushed out by the convenience and low-price strategies of large-scale supermarkets and is on the verge of disappearing – still remains at the Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street in Yanaka,Taio City.

1. Because of delayed development, the Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street is still home to streetscapes overflowing with the mood of 50 years ago. Tourists from Japan and overseas began visiting this market around four or five years ago. Efforts are underway to create a shopping street for tourists, such as by installing sculptures of cats (of which there are many here) and preserving the nostalgic, countrified atmosphere…
