Taxi

Taxis have display boards to show the availability status. You can take a taxi displayed as “空車”(Vacant). Taxi stands are located near stations, airports and commercial establishments. You need to wait in line to take a taxi. Generally, passengers ride on the rear seat of the car. Also, the driver operates to open and close a passenger’s door as you get on and get off the taxi, and there is no need to open and close by yourself.

The basic fixed fare of a taxi is 660 yen for the initial 2km, and 80 yen is be added for each additional 274m. A 30% surcharge is be added from 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The passenger capacity of small and midsize taxis is four. The rear door on the left side of a taxi opens and closes automatically; you do not need to open it yourself. Recently, an increasing number of taxis accept credit card payments. You pay the fare when you get off the taxi at your destination.

Rental car

When you rent a car, you should make a reservation in advance by phone. Most rental car offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. You need to show your driver's license (international driver's licenses are accepted), when you rent a car. You can rent cars in blocks of 6, 12 and 24 hours. The gas tank of the vehicle is filled up when you rent the car; if you do not return the car with a full gas tank, you will have to pay a gas charge. Though rental car charges vary according to company and vehicle size, standard-size vehicle usually rent for about 10,000 yen for 24 hours. There are often backups of traffic on metropolitan expressways and major arteries. The toll on the metropolitan expressways is 700 yen for standard-size vehicles and 1,400 yen for large vehicles (those with a displacement of more than 5,000cc.) Tolls are paid at toll stations.
