Tokyo's Traditional Crafts

Traditional Methods and Crafts Handed Down from Old Edo

Traditional Methods and Crafts Handed Down from Old Edo.
The traditional crafts of Tokyo are steeped in Tokyo's history and culture and made with traditional methods that have been handed down from generation to generation. Traditional crafts are redolent with handmade appeal and are universally liked, owing to their superior functionality and uniqueness. These qualities are lost in mass production. These items bring a certain richness and luxury to our lives. In addition to contributing to regional economies, locally-developed traditional crafts also play a large role in supporting regional culture

Support for the Traditional Crafts Industry in Tokyo

Most businesses within the traditional crafts industry operate on a very small scale; it is often difficult to assure that the craft will survive to subsequent generations of artisans, or that the raw materials needed will remain available. In addition, there is the difficulty faced in trying to create new sales channels. Tokyo's metropolitan government adopted a traditional crafts industry support plan in 1981 as a means to maintain traditional crafts and to train craftsmen and women. To develop the shared resource we know as the traditional craft industry, we must assure that they have a future for our children and their children.
