Climate Clothes and Personal items

Tokyo, being in a temperate zone, has a comparatively moderate and comfortable climate throughout the year. In summer it is hot, humid, and is often hit by typhoons, while long dry spells of fine weather continue in winter. The rainy season lasts from late June until mid-July. During the season, it rains almost everyday and the humidity gets very high. When the rainy season is over, the real summer comes. Ogasawara Islands, in particular, being 1000 km away from Tokyo and belonging to a semitropical zone, are an area of the eternal summer throughout the year.

Spring

Spring is from March to May. In early spring, there are still cold days when a heavy coat is needed, but in May it gets warm enough during the day that only a short-sleeved shirt is needed. Although there may be days when it gets colder in the morning and evening, most days are generally warm and comfortable. The tourist sites, therefore, are crowded with many people enjoying the balmy weather especially when the sky is clear and the humidity is low -an ideal condition for sightseeing.

Summer

From late June to middle of July we have a rainy season. It rains almost every day and the humidity rises very high. Especially after the rainy season, there are many days in July and August when the temperature exceeds 30 C° and the humidity is high. Such days are called mid-summer days, which often persist for some time. In August, there are quite a few days when the temperature does not fall lower than 25 C° even after the sunset-so-called tropical nights -when it is difficult to sleep well due to the heat. The summer solstice, with the longest day of the year, comes in June.

Autumn

Autumn is from September to November. In September, there are still hot days when the temperature rises above 30 C° in the daytime. Sometimes typhoons hit Tokyo in October. But in general, the temperature and humidity gradually fall with more and more examples of pleasant weather known as "glorious autumnal days".
In the Okutama area, beautiful scenery unfolds as the leaves turn to take on their autumn tints from October.

Winter

Winter lasts from December to February, with many days of low temperature. Even in the central part of the city, it sometimes snows, although the snow seldom piles up. The daytime hours are shortened, as the sun sets around 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, in the vicinity of the Ogasawara islands, the temperature stays somewhere around 20 C° even in mid-winter, but in the Okutama area, it snows much and the snow often piles up. This shows the variety of winter situations in Tokyo depending on the area.
