Illness or injury requiring immediate care

Make a call to the fire department at the emergent number "119." Make sure to say you need an ambulance service. An ambulance will be ready immediately.

If you were in a traffic accident…

Call the police at the emergency number "110." Make sure to note the time and place of accident, the name, the phone number and the license plate number of the other party. If you can't identify the place, ask the store nearby or a passer-by. Make sure to consult a physician if you believe you have been injured, as any injury that seems minor at the site may lead to serious injury.

<Places where AEDs are located>
AED is a medical device that helps restore normal rhythm by applying electric shock to the victim's heart. If the victim is unconscious and cannot breathe normally, AED must be used. It is provided at airports, stations of every transportation systems and large-scale commercial establishments, available for use by anyone.

Fire or earthquakes

If fire broke out…

If you suffer from fire when you are outside or at your hotel, follow the instructions and guidance of employees or store staff and evacuate immediately. Make sure to confirm the emergency exit in advance at your hotel. To make an emergency report of fire or ask for rescue/ambulance, call the fire department at the emergency number "119."

If an earthquake broke out…

If an earthquake occurs, first secure safety and stay there until the tremor subsides. Be careful of falling objects and hide underneath a table or the like to protect your head. When the tremors stop, open the door to secure a way out. If it is necessary to evacuate, do not try to get outside in a panic. Make sure to follow the instructions and guidance of employees or store staff.

How to call 119

  1. Call "119."
    • For public phones, press the emergency button on the phone and press "119." The call is free of charge.
    • You can call "119" from your cell phone, but make sure to say that you are calling from a cell phone.
  2. Clearly tell that "it's a fire" or "it's an emergency."
  3. Tell the place and address of the place where the fire occurred or landmarks nearby and if anyone is injured or sick, please describe their conditions.

How to call 110

  1. Dial the phone number "110."
    • For public phones, press the emergency button on the phone and press "110." The call is free of charge.
    • You can call "110" from your cell phone, but make sure to say that you are calling from a cell phone.
  2. Then explain what has happened. If anyone is injured, please say so, the police will call an ambulance.
  3. Tell the place and address of the place where the incident or the accident occurred or any eye-catching building nearby.

To report incidents, accidents, etc. at sea: call 118

The call will be connected with Japan Coast Guard. Dial 118 to urgently report maritime incidents, accidents, etc.

Disaster message exchange dial: call 171

In the event of a disaster like an earthquake, many people attempt to make phonecalls at the same time, making it difficult to get through. Call 171 to safely confirm places of evacuation among family members, via disaster message exchange dial, even at such a time.
Call 171 will be connected to the Disaster Message Exchange Dial Service, a nation-wide network. Following the voice guidance, messages may be recorded and played back. Recording and reproducing messages may be done from a home telephone. The call will only be charged during recording and playing periods.
