Tokyo's international gathering place
Roppongi is the gathering place for Tokyo's international community, and this international aspect has become even more evident since the World Cup in 2002, which was co-hosted by Japan and Korea. It is not unusual to find English-speaking staff at many of Roppongi's shops. Tourists visiting Japan for the first time will feel right at home here in Roppongi, even in terms of language!
The back streets are quiet residential areas
Just a block behind Roppongi's busy streets are the quiet upscale residential areas of Azabu and Akasaka. Full of lush greenery, these areas are also home to many of Roppongi's foreign embassies and consulates. This proximity of upscale residential areas to a huge entertainment district is one of the defining characteristics of Roppongi.
The coming of the business community
For years, Roppongi has been associated with entertainment, but a vast redevelopment of the area has been created huge high-tech buildings, making the town also known as a business district where many salaried men and women work.

Another characteristic of Roppongi is the large number of international style shops, restaurants and bars, including sports bars and authentic English-style pubs. As night falls, Roppongi teems with tourists and foreign residents of the city. Choosing a restaurant according to TPO is easy in Roppongi. There are almost too many choices, ranging from high-class restaurants where you may spot a foreign celebrity, to izakaya pubs where the atmosphere is casual and friendly. Roppongi is a town that all foreigners should ? and often do -- visit at least once.
