The New Year period

description

Situated on the border of Bunkyo-ku and Taito-ku, this was originally the land of Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the Mitsubishi Conglomerate. In 1886, the third head of the Iwasaki House, Hisaya Iwasaki, built the house from a design commissioned from the British Architect, Josiah Conder. It is a rare example of the full-scale integration of Western and Japanese architecture, and includes Western style rooms, a billiards room and Japanese style rooms.

Originally the home of the Mito Tokugawa family, this circular garden was built by Yorifusa Tokugawa and his successor Mitsukuni. The circular garden has a strong Chinese influence as a result of advice from Chu Shun-shui, a Chinese emigre. The garden is one of the finest remaining Daimyo gardens and has been designated as a National Special Historic Site and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

This was originally the estate of Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa, the right-hand man of the 5th Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. Yoshiyasu himself designed the landscaped garden, which has a circular path weaving through artificial hills. It has been designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

One of the front gates of the University of Tokyo, Akamon was constructed between 1825 and 1828 by the head of the Kaga clan, Nariyasu Maeda, when he married a daughter of Shogun Ienari. It has been designated as a National Important Cultural Asset. Situated almost in the center of the campus, the Yasuda Koudo overlooks a pond called Sanshiro Ike named after the novel, "Sanshiro" by Soseki Natsume.

Formerly the second home of Hosokawa, the head of the Kumamoto clan at the end of the Edo Period, the premises later became the main residence of the Hosokawa family. The park features a circular hill-and pond garden that makes clever use of changes in elevation and emphasizes the garden's natural scenery.
