description

This shrine is thought to have been dedicated by Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a legendary figure in Japanese history. The shrine pavilions were built by master craftsmen on the orders of Shogun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa, and have been designated as National Important Cultural Assets. Five deities are enshrined here, including Susanoo no mikoto and Okuninushi no mikoto. The Tenka-matsuri Festival, held here in Edo times, was quite a sight, with floats from throughout Edo participating in the festival. The grounds of the shrine are planted with several thousand azalea, and an azalea festival is held each year from middle April to early May.
