Hiwatari-sai (Firewalking Festival)
At the festival, Mt. Takao’s yamabushi monks walk bare foot over fire as part of their training to pray for world peace, people’s good health and longevity, protection from evil, and traffic safety. It is believed that spectators of the ceremony may still receive mercy from the temple’s deity without walking over fire.
