Pink Ribbon in Tokyo 2008
photo
Pink Ribbon is a global campaign that aims to increase awareness of the importance of early detection and screening of breast cancer, which is said to affect one of 23 women in Japan. While many cases of breast cancer can be cured if they are detected and treated early, the number of women who regularly get a screening has not been increasing as it should be. The movement, which originally started in the United States, has spread worldwide to educate people about breast cancer and reduce preventable tragedies. As October is a designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the campaign holds special events this week, including the pink illumination of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings and talk events with guest celebrity speakers, some of who are breast cancer survivors. Visitors may receive free educational brochures and tour the inside of a mobile mammography.
