Ume Matsuri (Plum Festival) at Mukojima Hyakkaen

Image provided by Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association
Featuring 360 plum trees as its highlight, Mukojima Hyakkaen garden was first opened in the late Edo period (early 19th century) when townspeople culture developed and flourished. Since then, the garden, also known as “shin ume yashiki” (new plum house), has been attracting many visitors who enjoy watching seasonal flowers in the garden. The plum festival is held annually in February through March as the garden’s historic plum trees come to bloom. During the festival, a variety of events are held to introduce visitors to Edo culture, including elegant tosenkyo games (a competition of tossing a folding fan at a target) on Feb. 14, 21, & 28, presentations of Edo-style street performance (presented by Asakusa Zatsugidan) on Feb. 20 and Mar. 6, and a presentation of Shinnai joruri on Feb. 27. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of white and red plum blossoms while experiencing traditional Edo culture.
