Setsubun Tsuina-shiki (Ceremony) at Ikegami Honmonji Temple

Attracting over 10,000 visitors every year, the setsubun tsuina-shiki at Ikegami Honmonji Temple features a parade (13:00-)of toshi-otoko and toshi-onna (people who were born in the year of the same zodiac of this year), followed by a memorial service, and its highlight, a bean throwing ceremony. At the bean throwing ceremony (15:00-), beans in plastic bags, which are believed to help worshippers stay healthy for the year, are thrown to the crowd by guest celebrities from a 50-meter-long deck balcony specially set up for the ceremony. In addition to popular TV figures, actors, and politicians, the guests often include many professional wrestlers and martial art fighters, since the temple is known as a place where Rikidozan, the founder of Japan’s professional wrestling, is buried. The bean throwing lasts only about five minutes, so arrive at the temple earlier if you wish to catch lucky beans.
