Fukuju-no Mai (Dance)

Fukuju-no mai is a dance offered at a special occasion at Sensoji Temple, Asakusa to celebrate blessings of Kannon, the temple’s dedicated deity. The offering of the dance started in 1964 when the temple’s Hozomon gate was built. There are two different programs of the fukuju-no mai dance, which are Takara-no mai (dance of treasure) and Shichifukujin-no mai (dance of seven lucky gods). The latter is performed for the setsubun ceremony. The dance is based on a kyogen program which was once performed as a curtain opener by former Ichimura-za, one of three Asakusa-Saruwaka theaters, during the end of the Edo period through the early Meiji period. Performers wear costumes and masks that represent Shichifukujin gods to perform this special program unique to Sensoji. The dance is offered along with a setsubun bean throwing ceremony. At Sensoji, the ceremonial call has traditionally been “senshu banzei fuku-wa-uchi” (fortune in for thousands of years) and does not include a common phrase, “oni-wa soto” (evil out).
